Review: A First Impression of Spycraft v2.0 RPG

by Perry Johnson

I recently ran a session of Spycraft v2.0 which was the first actual gaming session. I don’t count our prior session where we got together to create characters. Spycraft v2.0 plays a lot differently than other d20 systems that I’ve played. This game is the first in a while that my group hasn’t played D&D 4e or Star Wars.

Skills Matter – Most other d20 based games really have skills that don’t matter. Yeah, leveling them and raising them is important, but if you have low skills it isn’t going to negatively impact your character that much.

In Spycraft v2.0, you’re character’s skills are its life. The skills you choose define your character. They also give you really awesome mechanics to accomplish certain things in-game that you couldn’t do without the skill. This makes players feel like they have a lot of quality options when choosing skills.

The skills are important in Spycraft because the game makes them that way. Skills are much more of a focus in this game, and they are given a heavy amount of ‘crunch’. It will take players and gamemasters several sessions before they realize how complex and fun these skills can become.

Unique Gear System – The gear system is different than any other game I’ve ever played. Some of the gear pieces simply augment the statistics of the character. Some of them allow you to temporarily gain a skill for that particular mission, if you anticipate needing it.

In your average game, players are going to choose a primary weapon and a set of armor. Those are often your most important pieces of gear. After that you will get your adventuring gear which comprises all of your non-combat stuff. That is what most games do, but not what Spycraft does

One example that happened during our first session of play was that the player characters needed to get into a sold out championship hockey game to search for their target. They started designing several different ways to get in when one of them realized he could use one of his gear picks to get the group tickets for the game.

There was another character that created his own unique piece of equipment. He used gear and gadget picks to create a cane with a delivery system installed inside of it. He could put poisons and toxins in the system and deliver it to his targets by tapping them with the cane.

You Can Have Fun Without Combat – Spycraft is completely capable of being a game that is fun without combat. It definitely has the rules and crunch to do a lot of combat, but it also has rules for other types of games. If you’re creative, you can run session after session, never get into combat, and still have a ton of fun.

One particular instance that could have ended up being a fight was when they ran into two armed foreigners inside the hockey arena. As only one or two of the players even had a weapon, this could have turned out poorly for them. But they were able to use their skills to convince some of the arena security and law enforcement personnel that these two men were armed and dangerous. So the security and law enforcement officers took care of the bad guys for them.

Overall, I think Spycraft v2.0 has a lot of potential. It will take a special gamemaster and a special group to coax the power out of the game. I definitely think this game and system is not for everyone. But it is unique and deserves a shot. Anyone interested in trying a really skill-based RPG should give Spycraft v2.0 a try.

Critic Movie Reviews

by Shelby Hunt

For years now, the video store was the way to get movies. Now, with internet usage exploding, movie downloads are becoming very popular. Just about any movie every made can be attained through a movie download site now. Check out these samples.

Communion: Mental thriller with Walken well cast as author Whitley Strieber, who finds himself visited by odd beings. Does he need a psychiatrist or an exorcist? A tad long in the tooth and the dramatic scenes between Walken and spouse Crouse don’t really work. The movie still has some good moments. Cast includes Christopher Walken, Lindsay Crouse, Frances Sternhagen, Andreas Katsulas, Terri Hanauer, Joel Carlson, and Basil Hoffman. (107 minutes, 1977)

Shooter: Retired Marine Corp Sniper Bob Lee Swagger is asked to come to Washington, to help track another sniper that will try to kill the President. What happens to him next is a total shock. The same US government people that he is helping are actually setting him up to take the fall for the assassination. He somehow escapes when he is shot, and is now on the run. He is also ready to fight back.

The Gaucho: Cheesy melodramatics and moralizing, and not enough action hinder this lesser Fairbanks piece, in which he plays a famed, egocentric South American man. Cast includes Douglas Fairbanks, Lupe Velez, Eve Southern, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Nigel de Brulier, and Geraine Greear. (96 minutes, 1927)

The Three Muskateers: Musketeers Athos, Porthos, and Aramis join young D’Artagnan in an attempt to stop Cardinal Richelieu, who is plotting to form an alliance with the English. The Musketeers are abandoned, and asked to throw down their swords. These three refuse, and along with D’Artagnan will try and save France.

The Addiction: A New York University philosophy student is about to have her world turned upside down. She is bitten by a ruthless female vampire, and is now a blood thirsty vampire herself. Lili Taylor, Christopher Walken, Annabella Sciorra, and Edie Falco star. (1995 horror-vampire directed by Abel Ferrara)

The Great Race: Long, occasionally ludicrous, often labored comedy, not the best ever made as promoted. Fight pattern and barroom fight are highlights, although the pie quarrel falls flat, other gimmicks don’t work. This is absolutely a mixed box, albeit Natalie looked much better than she did in “The Darling Shrub.” Cast includes Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Keenan Wynn, Larry Storch, and George Macready. (150 minutes, 1965)

Lovers: Aristocrat Mastroianni has a fictional spouse; an organ grinder persuades prostitute Mori to “impersonate” her. While it’s not stupid, it’s unexciting. Cast includes Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Mori, Lino Morelli, Plant life Carabella, and Adriano Celentano. (93 minutes, 1976)

Lunatics A Love Tale: Raimi is a pleasant paranoid, restricted by his doubts to his desolate L.A. condo. Foreman is convinced that she causes everyone she cares for to die. Strange lowbudget comedy has genuine, if off beat, charm. Cast includes Theodore Raimi, Deborah Foreman, Bruce Campbell, Brian McCree, Eddie Rosmaya, and Michele Stacey. (87 minutes, 1992)

Money Train: Two unlikely foster brothers John, a black man, and Charlie, a white man, are both transit cops in New York. Charlie is up to his neck in bad gambling debts, and he decides it is time to do something he and John always dreamed about. Rob the money train. Will he be able to pull it off?

Thumper Jones

by James G. Pynn

If you know — good. If you don’t — you should. George Jones was one of the hardest drinking, fastest living son of a guns in all of country music history. Admittedly living a life modeled after his hero, Hank Williams, George Jones blazed a trail of infamy and heartache across the wide-open plains of country music history. Known for his distinctive voice and loose phrasing style, the exploits of George Jones have passed from mere stories into legend.

It’s true: according to Country Music Television, Jones is the “the greatest living country singer” today. In true George Jones style, I’m sure hed say something to the effect, “it’s the living part that’s tricky.” His clever turn of phrases and unusual vocal style can best be sampled on such legendary hits as “Hello Walls” and “If the Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me.” Then again, all of his songs carry that signature sound.

Famously married to Tammy Wynette, their marriage was one made in madness. It was the stuff of legend, often requiring the services of the local sheriff to help them mediate. Of course that’s a fancy word for “cool off.” Between his drinking problem and her drug addiction, it was not the high point of marital bliss for either one of them, When it all came crashing down in 1975, no one was surprised.

Now in his seventies, George Jones has not stopped recording or touring. Indeed, he is on tour this summer and is coming to a local gin joint near you. Though there might no be as much pep in his step, his voice is as rich and full as ever. No one can turn a song like The Possum. For those of you not in the know, that’s his nickname.

Booking your George Jones tickets is as easy as pie. You just have to follow the links to the best little booking service around. Don’t wait until the last minute and fall prey to the scalpers. Get a great ticket at a fair price and sleep well at night. But do it quick, because the Possum is not on tour for long.

Tips When Shopping For LCD TV Stands

by Dianel Powell

The variety and design of different LCD TV stands that are being manufactured nowadays can be mind-boggling. You can never seem to get enough of them. From outlet stores to online sites, they seem to be everywhere.

When it comes to style, the individual makes a choice. The reason for this is that we each have unique taste and that what we buy normally something that is according to our needs, wants or something that will fit our lifestyle, the color theme or design of our house.

The design is also left to the individuals decision-making. Again, it depends on whatever they deem appropriate for their type of furniture piece. They have the option to mix-and-match or mix-not-match type. Whatever it is they found most appealing, it is definitely up to them to select the best design.

With price, most certainly buyers have a say on this. Suppliers or distributors do the mark-up and pricing but they cannot dictate it to their customers. Some may bite the bullet but others will unleash their negotiating powers in order to get what they want. The purchasing power of the people and the demand for a certain product are the real ones that dictate the cost of these products.

When it comes to material though, there are only few better choices to make like when you are planning to buy an LCD TV stand, we have enumerated the best 3 materials :

1. Glass TV stand ” Glass is cheaper than wood but you it has to be tempered. You should also consider one that can manage the weight requirement of your TV. TV stands made of glass are sometimes preferable because of its style and its trendy and chic look that it gives. However, safety is a concern if you are going for this type especially if there are kids around.

2. Wooden TV stand ” This type of stand is the all-time classic stand. It is flexible and durable at the same time. However, you have different types of wood to choose from. If you would go for the natural or solid wood, it would cost you more but it is sturdy and long-lasting. You can also try the laminated or veneer type which is cheaper but the lifetime span is shorter.

3. Metal TV stand ” This type of TV stand is also sturdy and flexible. However, they are the most expensive among the three. This stand will definitely give your LCD TV a grand look.

When you have more time and more money to spend, the type of material is not an issue. However, when you are saving for something and you want to get the best LCD TV stand then go over the list and check out whatever will suit your need, style and pocket!

What’s Inside Your Spy Pen?

by Jonathon Little

A certain curiosity lies around the spy pen. We find people are intrigued as to what’s inside these brilliant little devices. We will be taking to pieces one of the most popular models today to spy pen video camera to see exactly what is inside and figure out what they are offering us for our hard earned cash.

I am sure I don’t have to point out the most obvious of facts that your spy pen contains a working pen. The lower section of the spy pen will be fully committed to supplying this function. We have all used one in our time; end off. I need not expand more without insulting your intelligence.

Contained within the upper section is all the goodies and bits and bobs were interested in. This bit of your pen is normally sealed and incredibly hard to access without destroying the outer case of your pen, which should be avoided without question.

The first item that show out and we almost lost was the power supply unit and housing. Taking the form of a battery there isn’t much to report here. We all use them in day-to-day life so no explanation is needed. Here is a good opportunity to note that a spy pens battery will roughly last 3 hours when recording.

Coming in a close second in the size scale is the built in DVR, standing for digital video recorder this is the section of the device that takes the footage and saves it as a digital file you can easily access from any number of electronic devices. The DVR goes hand in hand with the memory which we had 2gb worth of in our spy pen. Normally they are built together on the same chip.

This leaves us with the lens. You would initially think it to be tiny so see out of the small pinhole but to our surprise we found it to carry a small amount of bulk behind the casing.

Lenses like this are purposely designed to cope with poor lighting conditions and are given a relevant LUX rating that represents it ability to create an image in set lighting conditions. The lower the LUX rating the better.

That just about rounds up the breakdown of your spy pen, there is little room left available for any other devices or additions. Technology is getting better however and devices are being made smaller. Soon enough we will be able to fit more and more little extras in and we can do this all over again.
