The Evolving Trumpet

The trumpet, an instrument in the woodwind or brass collection, is typically made out of brass or bronze and has: a mouthpiece, bell, a spit valve, and finger controls. Trumpets are instruments operating fully chromatic because trumpets contain three separate keys for tone control. Some can also include a trigger line to fix any awkward sounds generated by the use of the few control keys. This line can be pulled while the musician is playing and the change is so little that it will be unheard when it is used. The spit valve is helpful for releasing any spit that has made its way into the trumpet. The history of this instrument is rather astonishing and these instruments go long back in time; as far in the past as 2000 B.C.

The tones of this instrument are created by the combination, inclusion, or emulation of the three top keys. The sound produced is achieved through the vibration of the lips on the mouthpiece and then changed further by the buttons before the tone gets to the bell, or end, of the instrument. The mixing of combinations of air manipulation became very important to the exploration of certain types of music. Seeing as the finger controls can be combined to create different sounds, all brands of music can include a trumpet sometimes.

The trumpet by nature, is pitched specifically for the soprano range of tones. This means, the chromatic range of pitches produced are from F sharp and back to C – prior to the clef controls air for treble ranges. Though, the broad range of options for trumpets are not confined to this range; some belt out notes in the G and high C area.

The beginning of these instruments was merely straight and elongated with a wide part on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. When operas were popular, the trumpet was put to the stage in 1607 during a famous Opera titled Orfeo. Later on in history, trumpets were sounded to send military communications but were later seen as a musical instrument. In the 19th century, trumpets became an important instrument during symphony orchestras. Today, the trumpet can be seen in jazz bands, military groups, marching groups, and at times, rock bands.

Once you become familiar with your voice stylings, you will be able to accurately fit your voice to songs that are within your range. Singing a low song as a soprano may not be the best idea. Try projecting the emotion of the song through your face and vocal phrasing. People respond to a heartfelt delivery whether it is perfectly voiced or not.

The Long And Colorful History Of The Saxophone

The saxophone, or sax, is a vibrant and important instrument that is apart of the woodwind family of instruments. The sax is typically made of brass and is typically used in an orchestra, band, or other musical group. The saxophone has a big history in jazz and big band. The saxophone is a complicated instrument that is made up of the following components:

These parts of the instrument have been developed over the years to further expand the capabilities via engineering and testing. The mouthpiece, in example, has been built out of different metals, like: gold, silver, rubber, glass, wood, porcelain, crystal, or bone. Instrument makers throughout the years have attempted various prototypes to improve the tone and overall sound quality of the instrument.

Saxophones have increased in popularity since their inception by Adolphe Sax in 1841. Sax was determined to create an instrument that would bridge the gap between all other woodwinds and brass types with horns. Sax made great headway and the saxophone became very popular in orchestras put together in the late 19th century. For military ensembles, the sax worked perfectly when tuned to include B and E pitches. Also, the saxophone was made to create the C and F sounds for an orchestra. Later on, the sax was used in the introduction and inception of jazz music and included the tone holes to produce pitches of all kind (A, B, C, G, F, and E).

After time, Adolphe Sax’s patent expired in 1866 which lead to the vast manufacturing of new models by a multitude of companies. And, in the 1950′s, a a man named M. Houvenaghel of France, introduced a new kind of saxophones which included a single-tone key arrangement which enabled the musician to control octaves with one thumb; this arrangement stuck with the sax and was included in all saxophones made from then on. Other types were tried and tried but this one-thumb control remained a permanent fixture to the sax.

Nowadays, this instrument is most popular in rock, jazz, and Army bands. The sax, today, is crafted of either brass or bronze and differ in cost and usability. Preferences are debated among popular musicians of jazz and funk; many jazz professionals like mouthpieces with a lower chamber because it produces the high baffle, louder, and sharper tone. Other classical players appreciate a larger chamber because they tend to generate a softer, easier sound. Whatever it is used for, the saxophone is the popular instrument to all kinds of music. From invention to improvement, the sax has made strides by leaps and bounds and is proven to be the instrument of choice for those who play jazz and funk.

Drum Instruction DVD: Focus On The Essentials

My experience with the speed drumming is a strange one. Basically, one October day, while picking up some drum sticks at a local music store, I noticed drummers using a device called a “Drumometer. This “drumming speed” measurement device used a practice pad for a striking surface with an embedded piezo trigger. The trigger was connected to a counter-timer computer brain that had a count and a timer display.

And most of the really successful speed drummers obviously did not want to give away ALL their secrets (understandably). So, I did what I could. And after spending 3 weeks (1-2 hours per session, 4-6 days per week), I managed to improve my speed by about 60-70 beats per minute. I really didn’t expect to win though; since several of Mike Mangini’s Berklee students were to be part of the regional competition.

Drumming at times can be a bit strenuous, though you will be able to play for hours when keeping the body relaxed. Without performing warm-up exercises before playing, the body can become tense and show signs of fatigue within a short while. We will explore exercises that are quick and easy encompassing the whole body from head to toe.

Vinnie Colauita once said, “Just play in 7 for like an hour”. This is especially insightful as we can often get caught up in studying things too closely and miss the point. Sheer repetition will help lead to more comfort in odd times.

Depending on the type of music, begin your solo to match the flow of the music. You might not want to perform a hard and fast solo to slow, smooth, easy listening jazz nor drum softly to hard, power-driven metal. Make your solo tasteful. Let it make a statement and signature of what you are creating. Utilize all the instruments of your drum set such as your snare drum, bass drum, toms, cymbals and other instruments that accompany the drum set. The final step in developing a solo.

However, six months is not an ideal time. If you have been playing the drum too often lately, consider changing it even though you may have changed it four months back. Signs that should tell you it is now the time for you to change are indents and cracks.

Well, I asked around a bit and was surprised to learn that the history of second line is a bit cloudy. Nobody can seem to agree on how it evolved, I heard stories about there being a line of musicians and staff that marched behind the mourners (second line) at a funeral parade in New Orleans. Apparently the musicians would play funeral marches on the way to the funeral and more livelier pieces on the return home.

Drummers like Zigaboo Modeliste and Johnny Vidacovich mixed second line with syncopated funk, developing a style called “second-line funk drumming”. This style was popularized in many famous bands that came from New Orleans like the Meters (see below). Second line drumming often involves a 3/2 son clave not dissimiliar to the Bo Diddley beat although it doesn’t necessarily always follow that rule, and Second line beats are also called “Street Beats”.
