If you watch Where the Wild Things Are online, you might feel like you’ve traveled back in time. A couple of generations have grown up reading the book by Maurice Sendak, and now it has been made into a feature film.
The book’s main character is a boy named Max who has been into mischief and has been sent to bed without supper. He runs from his yard, to a fence, then to a lake, then to an island where there are Wild Things, and they make Max their ruler.
It is worth it to watch Where the Wild Things Are online because of the glorious visual integration of CGI, animatronics, suitronics, and live action. After one particularly mischievous night, Max is sent to bed by his mother, played by Catherine Keener.
Outside, Max runs through the darkness, crosses fence, and finds a boat. He sails away into the darkness. Max eventually makes it to the island where The Wild Things are, led by Carol, who is played by James Gandolfini.
The Wild Things declare Max their ruler. Also in the cast are Angus Sampson, Steve Mouzakis, Paul Dano, Chris Cooper, and Michael Berry, Jr. It was going to be made into a movie in the early 1990s, but Maurice Sendak couldn’t find a director he felt was right for the project.
Sendak later found Spike Jonze, director of Being John Malkovich, and ended up offering the job to him. In 2005, Jonze and Dave Eggers finished writing a full-length screenplay based on the book, which is only 10 sentences long. Though it took a long time for the book to be made into a movie, when you watch Where the Wild Things Are online, you’ll be transported back to a time when you might have wanted to be ruler of the Wild Things.
